Yoga is not about touching your toes.
It is about what you learn on the way down.

You may be wondering, what is Yoga?

Yoga is a moving meditation that connects your breath with carefully aligned poses (asanas) to “yoke” or unite the mind, body and spirit.  The movement practice is actually just one of the eight limbs of Yoga - others include breath work, concentration, and attitudes toward self and nature, to name a few.

Yoga builds your balance, strength, energy, endurance and flexibility, while also relaxing, grounding and centering the body.  This helps to bring balance, peace and tranquility, while practicing presence in the moment.

Yoga is an ancient art form with 5000 years of history and is accessible to everyone in all walks of life. It is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self, bringing harmony to the mind, body and spirit.

Yoga is new to me. Will I feel awkward? Do I have to be "fit"?

Yoga Divine classes are all mixed level. I provide instruction for modifications so students at every stage of experience can participate safely and comfortably. Yoga is ultimately about self-care. Since you are the true expert of your body, I encourage you to listen to what feels right and make adjustments as needed. A little discomfort is okay and to be expected, but pain is not. Rest is always available and encouraged should you need it during class.

People of all walks of life, ages, identities and fitness levels are welcome in my classes. Therefore, there are no prerequisites! I am committed to cultivating a judgment-free space where you can feel safe, at ease and playful as you learn and try new poses. Yoga is not a competition, but rather an individual journey taken alongside - and supported by - a community of likeminded individuals.

Is Yoga religious?

Picture
People of all religious affiliations and beliefs are invited to practice Yoga. Yoga does not aim to spread any one belief system or religion. This is a common misconception, as we frequently place our hands in prayer position (anjali mudra) at our hearts during class, not to pray or worship, but rather to pause and honor our inner light and one another.

It would be more accurate to describe Yoga as spiritual in that it acknowledges the interconnectedness of human beings and the oneness of the universe. I start and close each class by chanting "Om" which is the sound that represents the universe and all lifeforms humming in harmony. Participating in the chant is optional but there are proven benefits to the sound vibration of opening your throat chakra (self expression) and slowing of the breath. Additionally, I close every class by saying "Namaste", which translates to "The light in me bows to the light in you, and we are all one." It's a way of expressing gratitude and acknowledging the inherit goodness that exists in all of us as we are interconnected in the web of life. Again, it is totally up to you if you'd like to say it back.

Ultimately, Yoga can mean whatever you'd like it to. You are in charge of your experience and can take from it what you enjoy and leave the rest. I encourage you to keep an open mind and give it a try!
